Research Areas

EU Security & Defense

Amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and instability in the Middle East, the necessity to bolster European security has never been more evident.

The Common European Security and Defense Policy demands unified action.

All EU members must take decisive measures to safeguard the Union’s core principles and ensure stability in the region.

Non-Proliferation and Disarmament

The EU promotes peace and protects its citizens by restricting the spread and use of weapons and defense material.

The EU helps enforce international treaties that ban the development of programs of weapons of mass destruction and conventional weapons.

The EU works closely with third countries and international organizations to reduce global weapons stockpiles.

EU Foreign Policy

EU Foreign policy, also known as EU external policy, is the set of strategies and actions that Member States agreed in the EU interactions with other third countries, unions, and international entities.

It encompasses a wide range of objectives, including defense and security, economic benefits, and humanitarian assistance.

Only together can the Member States of the European Union make their weight felt internationally.

The EU does not have a choice in the matter: its economic significance alone makes it an actor on the global stage.

Transnational Security Challenges

In an interconnected world the EU faces increasing transnational threats.

There is a strong link between what happens outside of the EU’s borders and security within Europe.

Security challenges have become more complex and multidimensional.

No EU Member State can face these threats alone. The EU made security a priority and enhanced all Member States to work closely with each other on a Common Defense Policy.

Strategic Foresight

European strategic foresight aims to integrate future insights into policy making, strategic planning, and EU preparedness.

By anticipating crises and opportunities, it empowers the EU to shape the desired future.

Through systematic analysis and scenario planning, it equips the Union to proactively navigate uncertainties, foster resilience, and achieve long-term goals.

Strategic foresight serves as a cornerstone in building a forward-looking, adaptable, and resilient European Union.
