European Commission presents measures to support a clean and competitive automotive sector
The Commission presented the Automotive Package to support the sector’s efforts in the transition to clean mobility.
Today’s package maintains a strong market signal for zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) while giving the industry more flexibility to achieve CO2 targets, and supports vehicles and batteries made in the European Union.
The initiative addresses both the supply and demand sides of the market by reviewing existing CO₂ emission standards for cars and vans, introducing targeted amendments for heavy-duty vehicles, and proposing binding national targets to decarbonise corporate vehicle fleets. The revised framework provides greater flexibility and technological neutrality for manufacturers while maintaining a clear and predictable pathway towards electrification.
From 2035, carmakers will be required to achieve a 90% reduction in tailpipe emissions, with the remaining emissions compensated through the use of low-carbon steel produced in the EU, e-fuels or biofuels. This approach allows a continued role for a range of vehicle technologies beyond 2035, alongside electric and hydrogen vehicles.
