United Nations Ocean Conference 2025

United Nations Ocean Conference

From 9 to 13 June, the city of Nice hosted the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, co-organised by France and Costa Rica. This high-level gathering focused on advancing Sustainable Development Goal 14 to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Held under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” the conference brought together heads of state, UN bodies, intergovernmental institutions, scientists, civil society organisations, Indigenous representatives, and the private sector.

The aim: to assess progress, share solutions, and forge new partnerships that strengthen ocean governance and resilience.

Building on the momentum of previous editions in New York (2017) and Lisbon (2022), the 2025 conference sought to accelerate efforts toward the effective implementation of SDG 14.

Discussions covered a wide range of priorities:

  • Marine ecosystem protection;
  • Sustainable fisheries;
  • Blue economy frameworks;
  • Fight against ocean pollution and illegal exploitation.

EPSO supports this multilateral initiative as an essential platform to reinforce global cooperation on ocean sustainability and promote inclusive strategies to protect the ocean.
